WSIB Safety Check: Look Up Any Employer’s Safety Record
📋 What This Guide Covers
WSIB runs a public tool — Safety Check — that lets anyone look up the workplace safety record of any Ontario business. This guide shows you how to use it, what the ratings mean, and why it matters for injured workers.
Topics covered:
- What Safety Check is and where to find it
- How to read an employer’s safety record
- Why a “safe employer” label matters (and its limits)
- How it connects to the rebate system
🔍 What Is Safety Check?
Safety Check is WSIB’s public per-employer lookup. It shows a business’s:
- Safety record and performance indicators
- Whether they participate in WSIB health-and-safety programs
- Publicly reported safety information

You do not need an account to search. Enter a business name or number.
📊 How to Read an Employer’s Record
When you look up a business, pay attention to:
- Their reported injury/safety history — frequent claims or convictions are a red flag
- Their participation in HSEP / safety programs — this is what qualifies them for rebates
- Whether they’ve been convicted under the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) — note: an employer can still receive WSIB rebates even after OHSA convictions (an OFL report found 58% of convicted employers got rebates the same year)
Why this matters: The same “safe employer” status that qualifies a business for millions in rebates is something you, as a worker or a member of the public, can independently verify.
⚠️ The Limits of “Safe Employer” Status
- “Safe employer” rebates are based on premium/payroll data and self-reported safety-program participation — not on whether individual workers were treated fairly after an injury.
- An employer can receive rebates while still suppressing claims or retaliating against injured workers. See Claim Suppression & Employer Retaliation.
- The label reflects the employer’s relationship with WSIB — not your experience as an injured worker.
🔗 How This Connects to Rebates
Employers that score well on safety metrics and complete HSEP topics receive:
- HSEP premium rebates (per validated topic)
- Ontario Safe Employers Rebate (up to $300,000/year for 3 years for CPO recognition)
- Eligibility for the surplus rebates ($5.5B returned 2022–2025)
So a Safety Check lookup is also a way to see which employers are positioned to collect public rebate money — and to ask whether that money should have gone to injured workers instead.
